NFL playoffs, Superbowl, and Pro Bowl to go online and on Verizon 4G

Have a wedding or some other engagement you must attend on Super Bowl Sunday? Cheer up! Now you don’t have to miss the big game.

The National Football League and NBC, which will be televising this season’s game on Feb. 5, have agreed to have the contest streamed online and to cellphones for the first time.

According to PCmag.com, besides watching on TV, viewers will be able to access the live action via NBCSports.com and NFL.com as well as on Verizon handheld devices using the NFL Mobile application.

Those with Verizon 3G phones will have to pay a $10 charge for the Super Bowl, while those with 4G phones will get it for free, according to the New York Post.

If you have AT&T or any other wireless service, however, you will be out of luck. And it will not include games televised on other networks. Fox told Reuters.com it has “no similar plans,” and CBS refused to comment about any streaming agreement.

The agreement also includes online access to postseason games on NBC starting Jan. 7 and the Pro Bowl on Jan. 29.

“We don't want to limit ourselves to people not in front of the TV," Rick Cordella, vice president and general manager for NBC Sports Digital Media, told the Associated Press. “The playoffs are appointment viewing. People schedule their day around it.”

The Super Bowl, being played in Indianapolis this season with kickoff set for approximately 6:35 p.m. Eastern Time, usually draws more viewers by far than anything on TV each year. Last year, when Green Bay defeated Pittsburgh 31-25, a U.S. record 111 million tuned in.

“We are pleased to work with our partners NBC and Verizon to bring our fans more ways to watch their favorite sport during their favorite time of the year," NFL senior vice president Hans Schroeder said in a statement.

Those who watch online or via handheld devices will not miss Super Bowl ads, and will also benefit from seeing additional camera angles, in-game highlights and live statistics.
