What we learned from Rutgers victory over Navy

1. The offense finally had its breakout game.

Head coach Greg Schiano said during the week his offense was ready to break through and have a big game. They did just that. While they had issues scoring in the first half, they finished the day with 21 points and 423 yards. Sure, stats can easily be inflated when playing the 85th ranked defense. But it was the best offensive performances of the season for the Scarlet Knights — which isn’t saying much — and the unit looked better. And put more points on the board.

2. The run game can actually be productive.

With the 115th ranked rushing attack playing the 112th ranked rush defense, something’s got to give. When push came to shove, Rutgers offensive line paved the way for Rutgers to gain 152 yards on the ground and one rushing touchdown. Redshirt freshman Jawan Jamison continued to impress with 101 yards and a touchdown. True freshman Savon Huggins on the other hand continued to struggle with 11 yards, no touchdowns and and a critical fubmle on Navy's one yard line.

3. The defense can get caught napping against the triple option.

All week the unit talked about eye discipline and not falling asleep — especially in the secondary — because that’s how Navy beats you. They run six or seven times in a row and then catch the defense off guard with a big pass play. The Midshipmen did just that to Rutgers on several occasions, finishing with 143 yards through the air on 13 passes.

4. The defensive turnovers continue for Rutgers.

So much for the turnovers being tough to come by against a run heavy offense. The Knights still recorded 2 interceptions against a team that seldom passes. While they were off their season average of 4.4 turnovers per game heading into the contest, the defense capitalized on the rare opportunities they were given.
