Other than a former head coach and a mirage of former players what does Rutgers University football have in common with the National Football League this coming season?
University officials announced yesterday it adopted new security measures in wake of the Boston Marathon bombing; particularly the NFL policy barring any bag that isn’t clear. The new measures, applicable to all Rutgers athletic events, begin with the Scarlet Knights home opener on Saturday, Sept. 7, against Norfolk State.
The university’s Division of Administration and Public Safety made the decision to implement the NFL policy, the Star Ledger of Newark reported. It is expected to increase security; enhance safety for fans and expedite access into the stadium on game days.
Under the new policy, fans will be prohibited from carrying any bag that isn’t clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags; packages or containers measuring more than 12x6x12. One gallon clear plastic Ziploc-like bags are also permitted, as well as small clutch bags. Those clutch bags can be taken into the stadium as part of the clear bag options.
Pocketbooks larger than a small clutch; briefcases; laptop bags; and knapsacks are no longer permitted in High Points Solutions Stadium. Also barred are alcoholic beverages, smoking, umbrellas, weapons and other items considered hazardous and/or unsuitable, according to a press release from the university.
Other college football programs, including Penn State, have adopted similar policies.
