Social network Google+ picked up over 2.5 million US visitors after its site went public on Tuesday, a seven times increase from the average 321,000 daily visitors it saw through invitation when it opened in June. Facebook had 72 times more U.S. traffic on that day.
Mobiledia reported that on Tuesday Google's search page featured a large arrow that directed people to join Google+, and it drew 59 percent of Google’s visitors on that first day.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Google announced a number of changes the day it went public. Search has been improved, as it lets users look for other users, and now also their posts and photos.
Hangouts, the Google+ video chat feature, has added the ability take part in a Hangout video chat through a smartphone or tablet – as long as it has a front-facing camera. It is currently only available on Androids. Another new feature called "On Air" lets users broadcast their hangouts chats to the public.

Competitor Facebook underwent a number of changes this Tuesday, and most users have been underwhelmed. According to BlogWorld, top stories and recent stories have been combined, and the top stories have been marked in blue on the upper left corner. Photos are now larger, and a ticker has been placed in the upper right corner showing your friends’ current activities. Facebook's changes are expected to continue.
Google+ is addressing the privacy concerns of Facebook by the use of "circles", where a posting is shared only as much as its writer wants. According to the Guardian, the post can be completely public – or limited to a circle of one person, or immediate family.
The Christian Science Monitor reports that public messages on Google+ have fallen by 41 percent during the past two months. Yet Google reports that over a billion items are shared and received on its site every day.
