HP Touch Pad sale gets even more supply at $99 price

The HP TouchPad, given up for dead by Hewlett-Packard after about seven weeks in production, is about to get new life.

Earlier in August, Hewlett-Packard announced they were pulling the plug on the TouchPad due to poor sales, so the company cut the price of the TouchPad from $499 to $99 in a going away fire sale, and suddenly it began to fly off the shelves. Now HP has decided to produce one more run of TouchPads.

Mail Online reports the extra production will be made despite claims HP may lose money on every TouchPad because the 32GB version takes at least $318 to produce.

According to CNET, HP will be manufacturing a limited quantity of TouchPads with WebOS during our fourth fiscal quarter of 2011, which ends October 31.

Some retailers aren’t expected to keep their price at $99. Representatives say HP will continue to offer the TouchPad on its Web site for $99 and $150, for the 16GB and 32GB versions. But each retailer will manage their own policy and process regarding pricing. HP suggests contacting your local retailer for their prices.

The International Business Times suggests that customers shouldn’t consider the extra run of TouchPads a comeback for the tablet. They believe HP wants to keep their customers happy who ordered the TouchPad for $99, and they also need to please component suppliers, who still have unused TouchPad components that are useless unless HP meets the remaining demand and makes another production run.

The Los Angeles Times speculates whether a newer, slimmer, faster, and lighter TouchPad 2 could arrive after the final run. Hewlett-Packard suddenly has a more substantial base for its TouchPad, but its future plans beyond one more production run of Touch Pads have not been made clear.
