Hurricane Sandy has left its mark on the lives of thousands, especially New Jerseyeans. When the October tropical “superstorm” left many were homeless, and others without power for days, some even weeks. It destroyed beaches, including the infamous Jersey Shore, which may explain why the storm is now placed among the meteorological elite.

With an estimate of $50 billion in damages to the United States, according to Philly.com, this storm was the cause of about 147 deaths.

Due to the impact from the storm, the World Meteorological Organization recently announced that its name would be retired from the hurricane list.

Hurricane names are usually re-used every six years, however in 2018 the next hurricane to hit will be, Sara.

Despite the controversial topic of whether Sandy was actually a hurricane once it hit landfall that Monday, October 29th night, Sandy has made history.

According to Dennis Feltgen, a hurricane-center spokesman, “The fact is, Sandy already had hall-of-fame credentials before 5 p.m. that Monday, wreaking devastation well in advance of landfall.”
