Android tech lead Xavier Ducrohet says Google’s new Ice Cream Sandwich is a major step up for the Android program. The new Android system was introduced this week in an event with Samsung.
The Ice Cream Sandwich is the latest addition in the growing battle of phone operating systems. Apple recently introduced the iOS 5, while Microsoft just came out with Mango, a long-awaited update to its Windows Phone OS.
According to the Christian Science Monitor, analyst Mark Newman said, "The Ice Cream Sandwich could provide the critical push in the race to catch Apple."
Wired.com’s Mike Isaac says the ICS is not just a mobile OS update, but a complete overhaul that includes tweaks ranging from widget resizing to interface improvements.
PCMag.com reports that Ice Cream Sandwich contains a new Face Unlock feature that taps a phone's camera so users can log in by just looking at the handset. And contact information is taken from your social networking connections and information you add manually, and the data is displayed on cards that are updated when your contacts update. The Android 4.0 has a voice-to-speech feature that lets users create e-mail, texts, and other functions just through speaking. And its browser includes Chrome sync, a “full site" button, tabs, and a new Incognito tab.
Cnet.com’s Jessica Dolcourt compared the ICS to Apple’s new iOS5, and found that each system borrows heavily from the others. Apple and Google are adding their own special ideas such as iOS's Siri and ICS’s facial unlocking.
