N.J. flood fears continue: Heavy rain forecast for evening commute

After receiving a weekend of rain and flooding, New Jersey is bracing for more of the same today and tomorrow.

In Lincoln Park, Forest Avenue is already flooded. Homeowners have sandbags out, but their resolve is running out.

NJ.com reports forecasts today call for rain to intensify during the evening commute that will turn into rain and thunder around midnight. Showers will taper off around 11 a.m. tomorrow.

One-and-a-half to three inches could fall across the region before the rain ends Friday morning.

According to philly.com, Gov. Christie has declared a state of emergency to mobilize the National Guard and state police, as record flooding is feared in North Jersey, where the Ramapo, Passaic and Raritan Rivers overflowed during last weekend's heavy rain, flooding many basements and forced evacuations in some low-lying areas.

In Wayne, residents who have grown accustomed to flooding are afraid this could be one of the worst rounds yet. The water is already several feet deep in some neighborhoods.

According to 7online.com, since Tuesday, 100 homes have been under water. But despite the flooding, many families are sticking it out in their homes because there is not a mandatory evacuation in place.

Residents say this isn't the first time they've experience serious flooding from the Pompton River, but they do say it's some of the worst. Town officials are closely watching the storm, and they're telling residents to move their cars to higher ground and to be ready to evacuate if necessary.

Jersey utility PSE&G released tips for dealing with flooded basements, from turning off the gas to heaters and hot waters to calling fire departments to have basements pumped.

And the Weather Service is repeating the warning, "Most flood deaths occurs in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear."

Fortunately, skies are expected to be dry until the middle of next week, giving waterways a chance to recover. Newjerseyweather.com calls for mostly sunny skies on Saturday with highs in the upper 50s.
