Possible meteor sighted Monday over Connecticut, New York, Philadelphia, Delaware

nightsky_optPeople in Connecticut, New York, Philadelphia and Delaware Monday afternoon reported seeing an object they said resembled a fiery meteor crossing the sky.

Chris O'Connell, a reporter for Philadelphia's FOX 29, said he saw the object as he was driving on Route 95 near the city's airport south of the Navy Yard and the sports complex. O'Connell described it as "majestic" and "beautiful."

Meteorites are pieces of space rock that look like balls of fire streaking across the sky when they enter the Earth's atmosphere. The majority are remnants of asteroids or possibly comets and their visibility depends on their size – many of them are only a few centimeters in length, and most vaporize before they hit the ground.

As of Monday evening, there were no sighting reports in New Jersey.

I saw what was perhaps the after affects or the sky near the meteor. Didn't see the meteor itself. But there was perhaps a trail and a hole in the clouds - like an upsidedown v. But what I did see was a beautiful sky. Rainbow colors, but more scattered through the clouds, then there was this incredible, huge ring around the sun. The outer edge was golden and a bit of green, but the interior was red or rose with hints of gold. It was stunning and I pulled over as I was driving and had never seen anything like it. It was around 12:30 - 12:35 p.m. 2/14. It lasted for maybe 5 minutes. I thought it might have been water vapors in the clouds - truly spectacular.

I saw the meteor during my lunch break in Mercerville, NJ. I kept it to myself for a while because I didn't want to be known around the office as the guy who sees things in the sky. Bad for my rep. After a little soul searching, I have decided to come forward and share my story because seeing is believing and I definitely saw a fire ball fall from the sky.
