3 Failings of N.J. State Police

BY MICHAEL HAYNE
NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM

A new report put out by the the state Attorney General details a litany of mistakes and rules being broken by State Police troopers and, not surprisingly, how supervisors are doing very little to catch the mistakes and fix them. The report covers the first half of 2012.

So here are 3 Failings of N.J. State Police:

1. Excessive Force. The report shows three instances in which troopers used force against motorists. The State Police reviewed the incidents and said the force was appropriate, but the office disagreed and investigations were opened.

2. Improper vehicle searches. The report found improper vehicle searches in nearly a third of the 155 stops they were required to examine.

3. Miranda violations. It seems there were 49 instances in which troopers made an arrest but failed to inform suspects of their Miranda rights, which can lead to lawsuits against the state and increased legal costs for taxpayers.
