Annual re-enactment of Washington crossing the Delaware set for Christmas Day

Trenton celebrating Patriots' Week Sunday through Dec. 31

The annual reenactment of General George Washington's 1776 Christmas Night crossing of the Delaware River will be held on Saturday, Christmas Day, at Washington Crossing State Park in Hopewell Township, Mercer County.

At 12:30 p.m., along the riverbank in the park off Route 29, state Environmental Protection Resource Interpretive Specialist Mark Sirak will explain the crossing and its significance to the subsequent Battle of Trenton, a victory that likely saved the Continental Army and the Revolution from collapse.

At 1 p.m., approximately 100 re-enactors dressed in period costumes
will re-create the crossing on reproductions of the Durham boats used by Washington‘s troops.

Ceremonies will be held regardless of weather conditions. The crossing reenactment could be modified if weather or river conditions are considered hazardous.

The park's Visitor Center Museum will be open on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring the Swan Historical Foundation's collection of Revolutionary War artifacts.

A related seasonal event will occur in Trenton from Sunday through Dec. 31 when the city holds its annual Patriots Week celebration.

This event, which celebrates Trenton's role in the American Revolution, will feature more than 30 activities for adults and children, including historic site tours, lectures and re-enactments of the battles of Trenton.

Puzzled Fan
I thoroughly enjoyed today's reenactment of Washington crossing the Delaware with my family. I couldn't help but notice, though, that the Durham boat used to cross the river moved with curiously quick speed and precise direction. Those characteristics, along with a lackluster effort of slapping oars from the rowers, posit that this could only happen with the help of some carbon-footprinting motors. Help me explain that to my 7 year old son!
