A tough year for New Jersey Transit just got even tougher Thursday morning.
Another person died on the train tracks yesterday, likely related to suicide.
According to lohud.com, a New Jersey Transit spokesperson said 39-year old Albert Supino of Ramsey ran onto the tracks right in front of an oncoming train at about 5:30 a.m.
NJ.com reports that 23 people were killed on tracks shared by Amtrak and NJ Transit and Amtrak for the first eight months of 2013. Twenty-two people were killed during all of 2012.
Westwood-Hillsdale Patch reports that NJ Transit has stepped up its safety initiatives. The company has added new fences and signs, cleared out brush to improve their engineers’ visibility, added more police, and installed posters for New Jersey’s new suicide prevention hotline at its stations.
NJ Transit said it was doing "everything possible" to prevent accidental deaths and is working with with suicide prevention agencies on handling suicidal trespassers,according to NJ.com. Trespasser deaths include people who die intentionally or by accident along the tracks.
The Federal Railroad Administration said trespasser deaths rose 26 percent between January and May.
Sue Heguy of Care Plus in Paramus and the Bergen County Traumatic Loss Coalition said, according to Westwood-Hillsdale Patch, “People are likely using trains to end their lives because they’re more readily available than guns or other violent means of suicide.”
NorthJersey.com reported that on Thursday, service on the Main and Bergen lines was suspended for a short time due to the accident, and trains were running with up to 30 minute delays after trains resumed running. New Jersey Transit said seven people were on board at the time of the accident, and none were injured.
