Gov. Christie is taking his proposal for a constitutionally mandated 2.5 percent cap on property tax hikes and government and school spending on the road, his office announced Friday.
The governor intends to hold town meetings around the state during May and June and the first, the only one scheduled for next week, is set for 11 a.m., Monday in Hoboken.
"We want New Jerseyans to understand our Proposition 2.5, to ask questions of the governor on a one-on-one basis,'' said Michael Drewniak, Christie's press secretary. After remarks explaining his proposal, the governor will take questions from the audience.
Christie wants to see the Democratic-controlled Legislature approve the proposal before it recesses for the summer to enable a referendum to be placed on the November ballot that would ask voters to approve a constitutional amendment establishing the 2.5 percent cap. Democrats are concerned the cap is too tight. The governor will be joined at Hoboken Catholic Academy, 555 7th St. by Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer.
