Essex County Prosecutor Paula T. Dow announced Tuesday in Newark that an East Orange man has been sentenced to 20 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to killing one man while robbing two others in Newark last summer.
Reginald Allen, 22, pleaded guilty on June 3, to one-count of 1st degree aggravated manslaughter, two-counts of 1st degree robbery, one-count of 2nd degree assault, and weapons offenses in connection with the fatal shooting of Eugene Davis, 27, of Jersey City.
Davis, the father of two children, was pronounced dead at University Hospital a short time later. Essex County Superior Court Judge Peter J. Vazquez Tuesday sentenced Allen to prison for 20 years. Allen will have to serve 85 percent of his prison term before becoming eligible for parole.
According to Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Eric Plant, who along with Assistant Prosecutor Cheryl Cucinello prosecuted the case, at approximately 10 p.m. on July 7, 2008, at least two gunmen pulled up in a vehicle and started shooting without provocation. The defendant shot Davis, pistol-whipped and robbed a second individual while also robbing a third man. The gunmen fled with cash and cell phones. Witnesses positively identified Allen, who was arrested a short time later. The other suspect or suspects remain at large. The investigation remains ongoing.
Prosecutor Dow commended Detectives Marquise Carter of the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Squad and Lydell James of the Newark Police Department's Homicide Unit with the investigation.
