An investigation by the Essex County Detention Center Internal Affairs Unit resulted in the arrest of a Steven McMillon, an Essex County Detention officer, charged with assaulting a 17-year-old inmate, acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced Monday.
IAU investigators referred the case to the Prosecutor’s office after they received a report about the assault, which the officer did not report. McMillon was suspended from his job January 4, 2011, said Captain Quovella Spruill of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau.
The 30-year-old juvenile detention officer was formally charged last Friday, and surrendered to police Monday. McMillon, of Orange, was officially charged with one count of aggravated assault.
Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office, said no further information on the victim would be released, and attempts to reach McMillon were unsuccessful, NJ.Com reported.
At the time of his arrest, McMillion had been employed by the Essex County Detention since October 23, 2006. Judge Peter Ryan set his bail at $20,000 on Monday.
