A 17-year-old was fatally shot and a suspect is in custody after a large fight on the Jersey City waterfront early Saturday morning, police said.

Jersey City police were called to the area of 90 Hudson Street around midnight for a large fight in progress. An off-duty Jersey City officer who was working in the area heard reports of the fight and saw two men shooting at each other, officials said.

The Newark Star-Ledger reported the slain teen's identity as Jermaine Williams of Jersey City. Williams was apparently shot then dove into the Hudson River. His body was recovered around 3 a.m. Saturday, the newspaper reported.

According to the report, Joshua Robinson, 30, of Jersey City was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and weapons offenses. Police were looking for the second gunman and it was not immediately clear how Williams became involved.

A law enforcement official at the scene said the investigation was still in the "preliminary" stages and it was too early to say if the shooting was gang-related. Crime scene tape was still up around the scene Saturday afternoon and investigators from the city police and Hudson County Prosecutor's Office were at the waterfront. Detectives were seen examining an unidentified item near Hudson and Sussex Streets. The object was marked with a yellow-tag often used by police to mark shell casings.

It was not immediately clear if a weapon had been located and police at the scene were checking if a gun could have been thrown in the water.

The shooting prompted a response from local police, Port Authority officers and the New York Police Department. The NYPD sent boats and a helicopter to the scene, New York police said.

A Jersey City police spokesman said he could not comment on the case because it was being handled by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office. Prosecutor Edward DeFazio could not be immediately reached for comment Saturday.

As the incident unfolded, some witnesses turned to Twitter to share reports of the shooting.

"Huge crime scene at the waterfront in JC. Heard a shot & 5 mins later a dozen cop cars, paramedic units, fire trucks & helicopters arrived," one Twitter user posted.

Images of the scene also streamed in from Twitter users, including one showing police helicopters hovering low with spotlights beaming down on the river.

A video posted online showed emergency vehicles on the scene.

Hours after the killing, the waterfront was calm. A jogger dashed by an officer taking down yellow crime scene tape. Two men on bikes turned around without asking questions as an investigator wearing gloves worked nearby.
