N.J. chapter's awards luncheon will feature recent Pulitzer Prize winner Wendy Ruderman of the Philadelphia Daily News
Pulitzer Prize winner Wendy Ruderman of the Philadelphia Daily News will be the featured speaker in Newark on June 13 at the annual awards luncheon of the New Jersey chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Ruderman and Barbara Laker won the 2010 Pulitzer for investigative reporting for their series "Tainted Justice" about the tactics of a police narcotics squad. Their stories led to an FBI investigation and a review of hundreds of criminal cases.
The Pulitzer is one of many honors earned by the reporting team. "The work of Ruderman and Laker proves their is no substitute for good old-fashioned shoe-leather reporting," said Joe Starrs, director of the Institute of Political Journalism, which is giving them its award for excellence.
Ruderman, 40, was born in Cane Place, N.Y., but grew up in Cherry Hill, N.J. She has been a reporter for more than 15 years, joining the Philadelphia Inquirer in 2002 before shifting to its sister paper, the Daily News. The New Jersey SPJ chapter is 51 years old and its annual journalism contest is one of the largest and most competitive in the region, recognizing work in print, broadcast and on-line media. This year's first-place winners include Mike Scott, editorial cartoonist for NewJerseyNewsroom.com.
The chapter will present its Stuart and Beverley Awbrey Award, which honors outstanding public service and civic involvement, to Amy Rosen and the News Transcript/Greater Media Newspapers.
