N.J. Sen. Bateman introducing sex abuse notification bill in wake of Penn State, Syracuse scandals

Would make failure to notify authorities a felony with possible jail time

In reaction to the child molestation scandals at Penn State and Syracuse University, Sen. Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset) announced Wednesday he will introduce legislation Thursday to require witnesses of child sexual abuse to notify law enforcement officials.

“In both cases, adults knew that the abuse was occurring yet they failed in their moral duty to take the appropriate steps to end the abuse,” Bateman said. “When my bill passes witnesses will no longer have that decision. They will be required to notify law enforcement authorities of these obscene violations.” Bateman is a member of the upper house Judiciary and Law & Public Safety committees.

The legislation modifies current New Jersey law in two ways; it requires any person having reasonable cause to believe that a child has been subjected to an act of sexual abuse to immediately report the act to law enforcement officials. It also, makes failing to report an act of sexual abuse a crime of the fourth degree punishable by a term of three to five years in state prison and a fine of no more than $15,000, or both.

“I hope that members of both parties, in both houses, support this timely legislation,” Bateman added.

Reverend John Graf, Jr.
BRAVO SENATOR BATEMAN!

Finally, someone who has the guts to take on a sensitive issue that has long been ignored in this country -- sexual assults on innocent children.

This necessary bill has the potential to end the ignorance that people fall back on to prevent sexual assaults on children from ending sooner than later. I would be very disappointed if anyone turns their back on this bill.

People have been turning their backs on young children as they have been sexually assaulted by some powerful community leaders and public servants. This disgraceful protection of coaches, teachers and others is finally going to end!
