N.J. voter registration: As deadline approaches, email scam surfaces

With the Oct. 16 deadline to register to vote just days away, the League of Women Voters of Ridgewood are warning the public about an email scam targeting individuals. The scam claims they haven't voted in four years and are no longer reigstered to vote.

In a Letter to the Editor, the league voiced concern about misinformation and confusion about voter identification. No eligible voter should stay home Nov. 6, 2012, the league said in its letter.

If eligible individuals are unsure if they are registered, check out the NJ Division of Election’s website, nj.gov/state/elections/voting-information.html or the League of Women Voters of New Jersey’s website, lwvnj.org. Voter registration forms can be downloaded from those websites. The deadline to register is Tuesday, Oct. 16, according to the New Jersey Department of State.

You have to re-register if you have changed your name or address or upon completion of a jail sentence, parole or probation because of a felony conviction.

A poll worker is permitted to request identification if the voter did not do so on the original registration form or if the id was designated on the form but not verified. Still confused, then check out the league’s website for information regarding ID requirements.

And remember, Oct. 16 is the last day to register to vote; just 21 days before the 2012 presidential election.

Applications must be filled out for new voters and if you’ve moved or changed your name.
