Police have said they found the vehicle involved in a hit and run in Newark Thursday night that killed a 5-year-old girl. Now the hunt is on for the driver of that Navy Blue Mercedes.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office said that Julianne Vega was struck as she walked near her home on Columbia Avenue with her 11-year-old sister around 8:30 p.m. in the West Ward not far from Valisburg Park. Little Julianne was hit so hard that her body was thrown in to the back of a parked minivan, her body denting the rear of the car, WCBSTV.com reported.
Vega was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead, Detective Hubert Henderson, a Newark Police Department spokesman told WCBSTV.com.
One neighbor said she heard a "tremendous boom and immediately called 911." Other eyewitnesses said the car was "flying" down Columbia Avenue when it hit Vega, and the driver never stopped.VIDEO
The Mercedes, which was unoccupied when it was found, was said to have been carrying at least four people when it hit the little girl. Sgt. Ronald Glover of the Newark police department told reporters that the vehicle was found at 7th Avenue and North 11th street early this morning.
Anyone with information on the driver or passengers of the vehicle in question are asked to call Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 877-NWK-TIPS (877-695-8477) or 877-NWK-GUNS (877-695-4867).
