Newark Police Major Crimes detectives and investigators from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating a shooting that left a man dead. The shooting occurred in the vicinity of 31 Downing Street Thursday night in the East Ward of Newark.
The victim has been identified as 42-year-old Medardo Trujillo, a Newark resident.
Officers responded to the Downing Street address just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 to find a Hispanic male suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to University Hospital for treatment but died from his wounds moments later.
“As the Newark Police Department continues to address the concerns of the citizens of this great city, we encourage residents to partner with us,” said Director Samuel DeMaio. “In regaining the safety in our city streets, we have to be vigilant in holding criminals responsible for their actions. The public can play a vital role in this endeavor; if someone saw something last night I urge you to use the anonymous tip line to help us to bring the person responsible for this horrendous crime to justice,” he added.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Police are continuing to process evidence gathered at the crime scene. No one has been arrested. No suspect has been identified at this time.
