Officials worried about triggering another collapse

HACKENSACK — No one, after all, was trapped in a car under the rubble of a collapsed parking garage at 300 Prospect Avenue on Friday, despite earlier police reports that a camera spotted a woman inside a car.

Why the garage collapsed also has not been established.

Hackensack University Medical Center is a few blocks away on Prospect Avenue.
The street was almost entirely filled with fire trucks, ambulances, police cars, and other trucks, and residents of the apartment house attached to the garage were asked to leave — perhaps to stay with relatives.

Residents in the area were asked not to drive their cars, in case that might trigger more collapses.

The collapse occurred at about 10 a.m. I live next door to the parking lot, and I was walking down Prospect when I saw a surprising amount of dust behind the apartment house, but I didn't investigate.

As I walked, I saw fire engines, ambulances, and police cars drive down Prospect, and when I returned to my apartment, I was told that a sidewalk had collapsed.
The entire block was eventually closed to traffic.

Residents of the apartment house are expected to be allowed back in Sunday.
