Have we learned nothing from Cheech and Chong? If you're going to be smuggling more than 50 pounds of marijuana across state lines, you're going to want to drive like a 90 year old man on a Sunday. But after crashing her SUV on Interstate 78 in Hunterdon County. a NYC area woman is facing charges of possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute, and possession of drug paraphernalia after state troopers discovered she was hiding 57 pounds of marijuana.
48-year-old Paulette Murray of Brooklyn was seriously injured in the crash and was flown to an area hospital. She may want to remain hospitalized for as long as she can since the troopers allegedly saw Pauline Douglas-Dawkins, the 58 year old front seat passenger who sustained minor injuries, attempting to cover a damaged cardboard box with a blanket. Officials say the troopers soon found a large package of marijuana in the box, with fabric softener used to conceal the pot aroma. Clean laundry and pot usually never mix. Douglas-Dawkins was immediately arrested and the SUV was taken to State police's Perryville Station. And if that's not worse, police discovered more packets of
marijuana in the SUV after obtaining a warrant.
The state of New Jersey is in favor of relaxing marijuana laws and the legislature passed a bill that wishes to decriminalize possession of up to 50 grams (slightly less than two ounces) of marijuana, making possession a civil violation carrying a fine similar to a traffic ticket. But even if alcohol is clearly the worse agent and bearer of addiction and death, 57 pounds of the magic weed may just be pushing the limit. Here's a look at some of the greatest NJ Marijuana busts:
1. 140 pounds of Marijuana, $500k, and ten separate arrests. Back in May, authorities in New Jersey say they seized 140 pounds of marijuana and arrested ten people during an investigation.
2. $10 million indoor crop. Vietnamese national Tuan Ahn Dang, 39, who used to live in Port Monmouth, admitted in April that he led an international drug trafficking syndicate that grew a $10 million crop of marijuana inside five rented houses.
