McDonald’s has announced that the “fantastically flavorful” McRib has returned. The ever-so-popular McRib sandwich, which has been virtually hidden in McDonald’s across the country, has made a thunderous comeback. The sandwich was officially announced to return to restaurants in the United States on October 24, 2011 (Since its creation, it has periodically been served in international McDonald’s restaurants), although some U.S. McDonald's franchises began selling the product before that date.

Avid followers of the elusive pork-rib style McRib will do anything for their fix. If they can find the sandwich, it will be available through Nov. 14. To find McRibs, McDonald’s has created the “Quest for the Golden McRib” on its Facebook page. But questers beware; McDonald’s warns that only the true McRib lover will succeed. To begin the quest, take the leap of faith here.

The sandwich, according to McDonald’s is dressed with sensationally savory onions, tantalizingly tart pickles and sweetly scrumptious barbecue sauce and is magnificently mouthwatering and fantastically flavorful. “Even your dreams dream about this.”

The McRib has 500 calories and 26 grams of fat making it slightly lighter than the Big Mac, which has 540 calories and 29 grams of fat. The McRib consists of a ground pork patty with sliced pickles and onions and is topped with barbecue sauce served in a six-inch roll. Despite the McRib name, the meat is mostly pork shoulder.

The McRib was introduced nationally in 1982. Like all cult favorites, the sandwich was not initially popular outside the Midwest and was removed in 1985 as McDonald's executives determined that pork is not eaten frequently enough in the U.S. to stay on the menu. The McRib Jr. was available briefly in 2000. This version replaced the roll with a standard hamburger bun, and was served with two pickles and a smaller pork patty.

The McRib has had a cult following spanning Twitter as well as Facebook. There is also a McRib Locator, a website where true believers can report McRib sightings and even truer believers can take a road trip when one shows up within driving distance.

According to McDonald’s, some interesting McRib trivia facts include:

• Every year McDonald's purchases 250,000,000 pounds of pork.

• The McRib sandwich as been mentioned twice on David Letterman's "Top 10 List."

• Each McRib sandwich is actually submerged in tangy BBQ sauce.

• The McRib sandwich sports 2 pickles and 0.25 ounces of onions.

• The McRib sandwich was spoofed in The Simpsons episode #303.

Marta Fearon, McDonald's U.S. marketing director, told USA Today that bringing McRib back every so often adds to the excitement. She added that it is not known if McRib will be back next year as it is too early to speculate.
