Who doesn’t dream of noshing on a succulently rich lobster in a crusty French roll with homemade mayonnaise for a fraction of what it costs in a seafood restaurant? In recent days, the Internet and Twitter have been buzzing about the coming of the McLobster roll. It is fiction, according to a Tweet by McDonald’s on Wednesday, despite all the rumors there are no plans to bring #mclobster or mcsushi to the U.S. menu. The Tweet stated further that they are working on a new menu item called McWinning.
And, consider the horrors of having sushi on a bun next to your burger and fries — perish the thought! As for the McLobster, somewhere a 1990s McLobster commercial has recently been hot on YouTube where McDonald’s advertised that the McLobster would be a short run special featuring Atlantic-Canadian lobster with crispy lettuce on a French bun.
The fact is that this rare sandwich was offered only in certain Eastern Canadian provinces and a few northern East Coast states for a limited time during the summer — and back in the late 1990s.
If all the Tweets and Internet buzz, as well as the YouTube commercial, may have whet your appetite and caused your taste buds to salivate, here’s a delicious DIY recipe to satisfy your lust for that succulent crustacean.
Lobster Salad Roll
Approx. ½ lb. shredded fresh lobster meat
2 scallions finely sliced (include some of the greens)
1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice and zest from one lemon
½ cup spicy mayonnaise (mix ½ cup mayonnaise with 1½ Tbsp. finely diced shallot, 2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice, zest of one lime, coarse sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste)
Fresh arugula
4 crusty French rolls
Mix lobster, scallions, lemon juice and zest with mayonnaise. Warm the French rolls. Fill with the lobster salad and top with arugula.
Makes four delicious sandwiches.
