Safety?--smart has a 5-star front and side rating. Can't get better than that. Rough shifting?--perhaps it's the driver and not the car. I have no problem. Storage?--more often than not, we take it for our Sam's run with no problems. I always find that negative reviews most often come people who have never sat in one, much less driven one.
