I think SC Guy is a little confused on what side means what. Marriage equality is the right thing here.
Same sex marriage has no effect whatsoever on either social cohesion or heterosexual marriages, as demonstrated by the shining examples of MA, CT, et al. Furthermore, it is also a great source of revenue, and I think NJ could use a little more money in its coffers right now.
The only argument against marriage equality that isn't factually wrong is that it isn't thousands of years old. And no one on the anti-equality side seems to be able to explain why that is a problem.
People who claim they're just following the teachings of the bible might want to explain why they aren't defending the stoning of adulterers. I'd say the picking and choosing of which "biblical" values to stand for has more to do with one's personal discomforts than with a mind towards following the bible word for word. It takes a lot more courage to say "Homosexuality makes me feel weird" than it does to say "It's immoral and I am, uh, standing up for morality. No insecurity here."
Ten years from now, marriage equality will be no more of a question than interracial marriage is today. Worth remembering that most of the country disapproved of interracial marriage at the time the Supreme Court overturned all such bans on it.
Maybe SC Guy should ask himself which side of history he would like to say he supported. I think I would be very ashamed to tell my grandchildren that I stood between my neighbors and their right to equal legal protections.
