Witherspoon - Cancer Clusters

Roger Witherspoon failed to mention that claims of increases in cancers, birth defects, infant mortality, Leukemia, etc. due to nuclear power plants have also been refuted by the American Cancer Society, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, American Academy of Pediatrics, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the state departments of health of Pennsylvania, Florida, Minnesota, Connecticut, Michigan, New York, and other independent studies. They have refuted the methodology and results. In fact, no state, federal or national agencies or organizations have supported their methods or findings, and none have found any negative health impacts related to nuclear energy.

With regards to your comment:your assertions regarding the NRC, the EPA and New York State are incorrect. the NRC does not do such studies -- they relied on the study conducted earlier by the NIH. New York State has never conducted an epidemiological study of the 6 nuclear plants within its borders. The EPA has set standards for contamination of drinking water. It has not conducted an epidemiological study of the people living near nuclear power plants.
There have been several attempts by civic groups to assess possible impacts from the continuing spread radioactive particles, gasses and liquids from nuclear power plants and nearlhy all have been crticized for not meeting complete epidemiological standards. That is different, however, from asserting that the plants have been given a clean bill of health -- something the NRC recognizes as now necessary.
