Governor Christie must resolve the Kean University scandal now

COMMENTARY

Governor Chris Christie must act in resolving the ongoing Kean University scandal, without delay.

The state university has been rocked with public embarrassment and derision for more than a year, and the turmoil must end now. First, it was found that university president, Darwood Farahi, had falsified his personal documents and academic achievements when applying for his current position. In addition, the Kean University Federation of Teachers and groups of students protested what they believed to be unethical practices at the university. Now, the university is faced with losing its academic accreditation, and has been placed on probation by the Middle States Association.

The university has been cited for violating standards of “integrity, institutional assessment, general education and assessment of student learning”.

The scandal has continued and reached almost comical proportions. Since Farahi became the university’s chief executive, the school has deteriorated from having a major financial surplus to now being hundreds of millions of dollars in debt. The scandal projects the reality that students, taxpayers, and the public at large are becoming helpless victims. It had been reported by several news sources that if Kean University loses its accreditation, “Students at schools without accreditation may not be able to get financial aid, transfer their credits to other colleges or use their degrees to attend graduate school.”

The Middle States Association has cited numerous academic and institutional failures that have resulted in the university’s probationary status. Rather than promise to make the necessary interventions that will attain a positive accreditation, President Farahi has “lashed out” at the Middle States Association in defiance. Clearly, enough is enough.

Governor Christie must recognize that the academic integrity of New Jersey is at stake. Millions of dollars have been wasted on a scandal-ridden university administration and an obviously careless Board of Trustees. President Farahi and the Trustees must be dismissed at once, with the state taking control and working to restore the university to a status that New Jersey and the nation can be proud of once again.

Yes, Governor Chris Christie must act in resolving the ongoing Kean University scandal without delay!

This is ridiculous my daughter is so upset and so are her father and I.. We spent so much money on school and my daughter has worked so hard and is doing so well, she only has 1 more semester to go to graduate. I will not beleive if she gets screwed with this situation. this a scam of all scams. Something has to be done this isn't fair to all those kids and families who have spent so money on their kids education. (it isn't cheap you know). Please Governor Christie do something.

Rolling Stones celebrate golden anniversary

BY BOB HOLT NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones appeared for the first time as the Rolling Stones at The Marquee Club in London on July 12, 1962. In spite of what their lyrics say, the band has gotten plenty of satisfaction in the 50 years since then. They returned to the location yesterday to mark their 50-year anniversary. Today they appeared at the Somerset House in London at the opening of an exhibit of prints and photos from their 50 years called The Rolling Stones: 50. A tabletop book of the same name publishes in the United States October 30.

Children can be conned out of inheritance after multiple marriages

BY CAROL ABAYA NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM THE SANDWICH GENERATION Multiple marriages and blended families can mean children get cheated out of money and assets their parent(s) earned and had before the second or third marriage. At the 2012 senior citizens’ law day conference, Lawrence A. Friedman, Bridgewater elder law attorney, said elders need to protect their children of prior marriages from being disinherited. "Even if your spouse’s current will provides for your children, your spouse may change it after you pass away,” he said. In addition to protecting one's child, an appropriate will can minimize N.J. estate taxes, which kick in if assets are over $675,000. At the conference, Cathyanne Pisciotta from North Brunswick discussed guardianship which could be necessary if various legal documents are not signed. Pisciotta said that if a person does not have a durable power of attorney (for financial affairs) and a living will (for medical decisions), anyone else can seek guardianship of that person. An expensive court proceeding is mandatory. And she said, “If one person seeks guardianship, someone else can challenge the appointment. Another relative may seek to be appointed guardian because he/she wants the money and power.”
