An 8-year-old rescue dog named Mugly won honors as World's Ugliest Dog at the annual contest in Petaluma, California last week.
Mugly is a Chinese crested dog from the United Kingdom. He has previous championship experience, having been named Britain’s ugliest dog in 2005.
The Ugliest Dog contest was started to raise awareness of rescue dogs and the dangers of inbreeding. Competing dogs were judged on first impression, their own special attributes, personality and audience popularity, according to Howell Patch.
Mugly was able to defeat 28 other contenders from around the world in the contest. According to ABC News, he beat 2002 champion Rascal, 2010 champion Princess Abby, a 4-year-old Japanese chin mix, and perennial contender Icky.
Mugly’s owner Bev Nicholson said, “I couldn’t speak when they announced Mugly’s name. I was shaking as much as the dog.”
She added, “I think that he is the most beautiful dog from the inside out and want the world to know that too,” according to the Peterborough Telegraph.
According to Sonoma-marinfair.org, Mugly was viciously attacked in a park by a group of thugs a few years back. But he is now a Pets As Therapy dog and works with children. Mugly also raises funds for rescue charities by holding online dog pageants and competitions.
Mugly's victory continues a current run of dominance for the Chinese crested breed. CBS News reported the 2011 winner was named Yoda, a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix.
Mugly won $1,000, a trophy, a photo shoot, a VIP stay at the Petaluma Sheraton, and a year’s supply of dog cookies.
