For years, there has been chatter that DC Comics was going to introduce a gay character. But recently, the company’s co-publisher Dan DiDio said that rather than a new LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) character being added to the story line, a “prominent” DC Comics character will soon come out of the closet, according to a report by MSN.
DiDio made the statement during an interview at the Kapow Comics Convention, creating a buzz on social network sites.
Twitter users have cited Aquaman and Wonder Woman as the most likely candidates, the report said.
DC officials have said that one of the major iconic characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in a June issue, ABC News reported.
Last September, DC Comics relaunched its entire line of comic books to feature an updated look and feature characters including Voodoo, an African American bisexual woman, and Batwoman, an open lesbian.
However, the unveiling of a gay character won’t be the first in comics. Marvel Comic’s Northstar was revealed to be in a gay relationship back in 2009. And Archie Comics introduced a gay character in 2010, and there was a gay wedding in Riverdale in 2011.
