A Super Bowl commercial for the new Honda CR-V will feature Matthew Broderick, the Broadway star best remembered for his iconic role in "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off." Although the actor plays himself in the TV spot and not Bueller, he does recreate several scenes from the successful 1986 comedy.
The advertisement shows Broderick waking up in bed and talking to a Hollywood producer about how sick he feels. “I guess I’ll be OK,” he says. “People are depending on me. Movies bring so much joy.”
After the producer agrees to let Broderick take the day off, the actor turns to the camera and simply says, “He bought it.” The rest of the advertisement continues through the morning routine made popular by Bueller in the John Hughes film.
Besides playing the famous “Oh Yeah” song from the movie, Broderick talks to the audience while brushing his teeth and drying his hair. When he gets down to the lobby of his apartment building, the parking attendant says, “Broderick, Broderick,” in the same droll tone used by Ben Stine in the ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.’
Later on while driving, Broderick pulls up next to the Hollywood producer on the road, but hides his face with a large panda bear he won at a carnival.
A two-minute-30-second extended version of “Matthew’s Day Off” is currently available on YouTube. The Super Bowl ad will be much shorter.
Todd Phillips, director of ‘Old School’ and ‘The Hangover,’ directed the commercial, and RPA, a full-service advertising agency, produced the advertisement. “Ferris fans, keep an eye out for the dozens of ‘Easter eggs’ hidden in the spot,” RPA writes on its official website.
The advertisement is one of only a handful to be released before the big game on Sunday, Feb. 5.
