Neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman told police he shot Trayvon Martin in self-defense after an altercation where Martin repeatedly bashed his head into a concrete walkway. Zimmerman was said to be bleeding from the nose and the back of his head, and his lawyer said Martin broke Zimmerman’s nose in the fight.

A police video taken the night of the shooting seems to indicate otherwise.

According to ABC News, the video shows Zimmerman arriving at the Sanford police station. He was wearing a red and black fleece and his face and head are cleanly shaven. In the video, there appeared to be no evidence of bruises, or blood or blood stains on Zimmerman.

Zimmerman's attorney Craig Sonner appeared on the Today show and said the video was "very grainy." He also said that Zimmerman had been "cleaned-up" and given first aid in the time between the altercation and his arrival at the police station.

A Reuters report in the Ottawa Citizen said Zimmerman had been treated by the fire department after the fight, making it possible that bleeding had been stopped. A witness reportedly saw Martin beating Zimmerman before t he shooting occurred, but Martin's mother says the cries for help on a 911 tape were from Trayvon.

According to the New York Daily News, Sonner said it looked like a police officer was examining the back of Zimmerman’s head in the video. Officer Timothy Smith wrote in the police report, "I could observe his back appeared to be wet and was covered in grass, as if he had been laying on his back on the ground.”

Zimmerman was walking with no problem when he exited the squad car, and did not seem to be in pain.

Richard Kurtz, the Fort Lauderdale funeral director who prepared Trayvon Martin’s body for burial said to Nancy Grace that there appeared to be a gunshot wound in Martin’s upper chest, but he saw no cuts or bruises on his hands that would have indicated a recent fight.
