New York Yankees’ pitcher Mariano Rivera is one step closer to returning to baseball in 2013.
The 42-year-old Yankees closer underwent surgery on his right knee on Tuesday according to the Associated Press. Rivera posted a tweet on his Twitter account stating that the surgery had been a success.“My surgery was a success, it went perfectly. I am looking forward to beginning my rehab soon. Thanks as always for your prayers. #Godbless,” said Rivera in a tweet.
Rivera has been out of action since he tore his right ACL and damaged meniscus in his knee in a batting practice back on May 3. Surgery was pushed back due to a blood clot in Rivera’s right calf.
Yankees manager Joe Giardi told the AP that the surgery allows Rivera a comeback in 2013.
“I think we’re all expecting to see Mo pitch next year,” said Giardi to the AP. “I really don’t think we’re going to see any issues."
An exact date for Rivera’s return has not been determined but Girardi does not rule out Rivera’s return to be at spring training.
“I’m sure Mo’s anxious to get going,” said Girardi. “He was feeling pretty good when he was walking around before the surgery.”
