The Game

Rutgers (5-2, 2-1 BIG EAST) continues BIG EAST play as the Scarlet Knights welcome No. 25/24 West Virginia to High Point Solutions Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on ABC.

Calling the game for ABC is Mark Neely (play-by-play) and Ray Bentley (color analyst).

Rutgers Rush Hour, a one-hour condensed replay of the game, airs Sunday at 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. on SNY. The full-game replay airs Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 1:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. on SNY.

Scouting West Virginia

West Virginia, ranked No. 25 by the Associated Press and No. 24 in the USA Today/Coaches poll, enters Saturday’s game 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in BIG EAST action.

WVU has defeated Marshall (34-13), Norfolk State (55-12), Maryland (37-31), Bowling Green (55-10) and Connecticut (43-16) while losing to No. 1 LSU (47-21) and at Syracuse (49-23).

The Mountaineers have one of the nation’s most prolific passing offenses, ranking fifth nationally (374.4 ypg). WVU is 13th in the nation in scoring offense (38.3) and 100th in rushing offense (115.4 ypg).

On defense, WVU has the nation’s 21st-ranked unit (321.4 ypg). The Mountaineers rank 57th in scoring defense (25.4), 43rd in rushing defense (130.4 ypg) and 24th in pass defense (191.0 ypg).

West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith leads the BIG EAST and is sixth nationally in total offense (350.0 ypg). He also leads the BIG EAST in passing efficiency. Wide receiver Tavon Austin is second nationally in all-purpose yards (183.0 ypg).

Series Information

Saturday’s game marks the 39th meeting between the two schools. West Virginia has won 16 straight vs. Rutgers and leads the all-time series, 32-4-2. All four of Rutgers’ victories in the series have come at home, including the last in 1994 (17-12). In BIG EAST play, Rutgers is 2-18 vs. the Mountaineers.

The last time the two schools played in Piscataway, West Virginia earned a 24-21 victory. Mohamed Sanu totaled 158 all-purpose yards, including six receptions for 105 yards receiving in the contest. Sanu hauled in a 62-yard touchdown reception in the game, his longest career reception.

Three of the last five meetings have been decided by seven points or less.

The Head Coaches

Rutgers: Greg Schiano (Bucknell ‘88) is in his 11th season with the Scarlet Knights. Schiano is just the fourth coach in BIG EAST history to coach 10 seasons at the same school, along with Paul Pasqualoni (Syracuse, 14 years), Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech, 13 years) and Don Nehlen (West Virginia, 10 years). Schiano (64-65) is third all-time in victories among BIG EAST coaches. The 2006 National and BIG EAST Coach of the Year, Schiano has guided Rutgers to a school-record five bowl appearances over the previous six seasons, including four bowl victories.

West Virginia: Dana Holgorsen (Iowa Wesleyan ‘93) is in his first season with the Mountaineers. Known as one of the best offensive coaches in the nation, Holgorsen has 18 years of collegiate coaching experience with 11 bowl appearances. In 2010 as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, the Cowboys led the nation in total offense during the regular season and finished No. 2 in passing offense and No. 3 in total and scoring offense.
