Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow: New York just ain’t big enough for the two of them, according to Santonio Holmes.
The Jets’ wide receiver asserted that having two quarterbacks just doesn’t work in the NFL because it would break a quarterback’s rhythm. Quarterbacks need time to feel the crowd, make a couple of mistakes, and then settle down.
"You don't just change a guy out just because he has a few mistakes early into a game. Coming into this season, we have a lot to expect from Sanchez," said Holmes, according to ESPN.
However, after watching both quarterbacks practice at the “Jets West” passing camp in California, Holmes does think that having the two quarterbacks may work as long as Tebow sticks to his back-up role, reports the NY Daily News. The ex-Bronco has been given a few scripted plays while Sanchez has been given the bulk of the work.
This enforces the Jets' coaching staff's assertions that Sanchez is still the Jets' main quarterback.
Holmes admitted that Tebow was doing well with the team, but said that “Sanchez has done everything that he can do to keep his starting spot. I'm thinking that he's going to be our guy this season…He's going to be our guy that we depended on for the past couple of years and he's going to get the job done this year,” reports The Wall Street Journal.
Now, the Jets' wide receiver has his own demons. After having only 51 receptions and 654 yards, he sat the last game against the Dolphins, according to ESPN NFL. He was benched because of arguing with his teammates in the huddle, the climax of a season-long tension between Sanchez and Holmes.
When speaking about the relationship between the quarterback and receiver, LaDamian Tomlinson said, "It is as bad as I’ve ever been around, honestly. And I’ve been around some locker rooms and quarterback-receiver situations and what-not. But it was as bad as I’ve been around," according to the NY Post.
As an avid supporter of Sanchez now, Holmes has apparently changed his tune.
