World Series Schedule 2011: Rangers vs. Cardinals report

BY BOB HOLT
NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM

The 107th edition of the World Series begins Wednesday night in St. Louis when the National League champion Cardinals face the American League winning Texas Rangers in game one.

The Washington Post calls the Cardinals and the Rangers both ultimate survivors. St. Louis was 10 1/2 games behind in late August and sneaked into the National League playoffs as the wild card on the last day of the season when the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves. Texas saw their American League West lead fall from seven games to 1 1/2 during a three week stretch in August and September, but held on to repeat in the World Series.

Meanwhile, Texas saw ace starter Cliff Lee leave for Philadelphia as a free agent in December. And Cardinals ace and 2010 Cy Young award runner-up Adam Wainwright had surgery on his right arm in February.

2011 World Series Prediction: Texas Rangers vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Bleacher Report lists C.J. Wilson as the first game starting pitcher for Texas. His 2011 record was 16-7, with a 2.94 ERA. Wilson is considered the ace of the Rangers pitching staff, but during the post-season, he has allowed six earned runs in two of three starts while walking five in the other.

And Chris Carpenter is scheduled to start for St. Louis. Carpenter was 11-9, with a 3.45 ERA in 2011. Carpenter had 16 starts where he gave up three earned or less but wasn’t able to get a win. He was able to hold the Phillies scoreless as the Cardinals won 1-0 in the deciding game of the opening series.
