Samsung called the verdict awarding Apple over $1 billion in their patent infringement lawsuit “a loss for the American consumer.”

Apple won $1.05 billion in damages after a jury ruled that Samsung infringed five of seven patents from the company. It was the fourth largest amount awarded in a patent case in U.S. history. Apple sued Samsung in April 2011, and Samsung fired back with a lawsuit of their own.

An Associated Press report on NBC 10 Philadelphia said that according to the jury, several Samsung devices illegally took Apple ideas like a "bounce-back" feature where a user can scroll to an end image and the ability to zoom text by tapping a finger.

According to CNET News, an internal report from Samsung showed a number of side-by-side slides in which the company compared its first Galaxy smartphone to the iPhone and offered suggestions on how to make the Galaxy more like the Apple model.

An Apple statement read: “We value originality and innovation and pour our lives into making the best products on earth. We make these products to delight our customers, not for our competitors to flagrantly copy. We applaud the court for sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn't right.”

According to Todayonline.com, a statement by Samsung read: "It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and others."

Apple filed a motion to get Samsung to take some of its devices off the market with a hearing scheduled for Sept. 20, according to Venture Beat. The jury also determined that many of the Apple patents were willfully infringed upon by Samsung, which would give the judge the option of tripling the damages.

WSJ.com reported that Apple is partly looking to slow down the Android operating system that is used by Samsung and other manufacturers. Reports said that in the second quarter of 2012, Android phones represented 68 percent of the smartphone market, while Apple only shipped 17 percent.

Children can be conned out of inheritance after multiple marriages

BY CAROL ABAYA NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM THE SANDWICH GENERATION Multiple marriages and blended families can mean children get cheated out of money and assets their parent(s) earned and had before the second or third marriage. At the 2012 senior citizens’ law day conference, Lawrence A. Friedman, Bridgewater elder law attorney, said elders need to protect their children of prior marriages from being disinherited. "Even if your spouse’s current will provides for your children, your spouse may change it after you pass away,” he said. In addition to protecting one's child, an appropriate will can minimize N.J. estate taxes, which kick in if assets are over $675,000. At the conference, Cathyanne Pisciotta from North Brunswick discussed guardianship which could be necessary if various legal documents are not signed. Pisciotta said that if a person does not have a durable power of attorney (for financial affairs) and a living will (for medical decisions), anyone else can seek guardianship of that person. An expensive court proceeding is mandatory. And she said, “If one person seeks guardianship, someone else can challenge the appointment. Another relative may seek to be appointed guardian because he/she wants the money and power.”
