These horses were typically no longer profitable as racers; too old for riding schools; injured or sick; owner-abandoned. Now they’re enjoying the good life on a farm in New Egypt. The people who made this happen need help helping these horses and others.
Sunday, April 17: save the date and help save horses. Horse Rescue United – an organization dedicated to saving and placing horses who would probably otherwise go to slaughter – hosts an open house that day. The public is invited to the event in New Egypt, NJ.
Marking its first year in existence, Horse Rescue United (HRU) is a registered not-for-profit NJ business that has applied for 501[c](3) non-profit status. Since last March, HRU has helped save and place or adopt out more than 30 horses — all either saved from auctions or feedlots, or owner-surrendered.
In all cases, these rescue horses need massive doses of TLC, coming in a variety of forms from medical care to pasturing. Their stories before HRU came along are chilling and tear-inducing. They range from a mare with a grievous head wound (she was treated and later adopted, though she’ll be there for the open house) to a gelding whose eye cancer has spread, but who will live out his remaining months pain-free in a green field. There are also three horses ready for adoption: a Standardbred gelding, Cooper, and a mare, Jessica, and another Standardbred mare, Justice, expected to have her foal later this spring. HRU reps hope Justice and the foal can be adopted or fostered together.
The open house will give visitors a chance to meet the rescued horses as well as HRU board members and volunteers. There will be a silent auction, a bake sale, arts and crafts for kids, snacks, jewelry, children’s books and HRU merchandise for sale.
HRU open house on April 17: from 11 am to 3 pm at 199 E Colliers Mills Road, New Egypt, NJ. The event is free and visitors will have a chance to meet the rescue’s horses.
All carrots welcome.

One interesting fact to point out...the majority of horses that HRU has saved are actually under the age of 14, and many of those were under the age of 7 or 8.
Many of these horses were surrendered to us by concerned owners or trainers who didn't want their horses to end up in the auction and slaughter pipeline. We hope to help as many horses as we can while running a responsible rescue and are pleased to have placed over 30 horses in loving homes in the past year. Thank you for running this story and thanks to all of the HRU supporters and adopters out there!
