Seton Hall University President Dr. A. Gabriel Esteban, State Senator Richard Codey, Assemblywoman Mila M. Jasey and AT&T Mid-Atlantic President Mike Schweder will join Center for Mobile Research & Innovation (CMRI) Academic Director Dr. Michael A. Taylor, Newark Technology High School students and students from Seton Hall’s Martin Luther King, Jr., Leadership Program to announce the launch of an innovative, year-long extra-curricular program to introduce underserved students to science and technology careers – including mobile app development -- on Thursday, September 13 at 1:00pm at Seton Hall University, Jubilee Hall Auditorium, 400 South Orange Avenue, South Orange, NJ.

AT&T will present a $250,000 contribution to the program as part of its national Aspire campaign to help more students graduate from high school ready for careers and college.

Beginning in January, the Young Developers Program will give fifteen Newark Technology High students the opportunity to work with Seton Hall student and faculty mentors, as well as industry professionals, to create mobile apps that promote social good.

The goal of the pilot program, under the auspices of CMRI, is to create a turn-key model that can be implemented in cities around the country to serve at-risk youth. It exemplifies the University’s commitment to working with public and private sector partners to promote positive social change in the community.

The curriculum will introduce the students to the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines through mobile app programming, with a focus on college preparation and developing workplace development skills.

Children can be conned out of inheritance after multiple marriages

BY CAROL ABAYA NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM THE SANDWICH GENERATION Multiple marriages and blended families can mean children get cheated out of money and assets their parent(s) earned and had before the second or third marriage. At the 2012 senior citizens’ law day conference, Lawrence A. Friedman, Bridgewater elder law attorney, said elders need to protect their children of prior marriages from being disinherited. "Even if your spouse’s current will provides for your children, your spouse may change it after you pass away,” he said. In addition to protecting one's child, an appropriate will can minimize N.J. estate taxes, which kick in if assets are over $675,000. At the conference, Cathyanne Pisciotta from North Brunswick discussed guardianship which could be necessary if various legal documents are not signed. Pisciotta said that if a person does not have a durable power of attorney (for financial affairs) and a living will (for medical decisions), anyone else can seek guardianship of that person. An expensive court proceeding is mandatory. And she said, “If one person seeks guardianship, someone else can challenge the appointment. Another relative may seek to be appointed guardian because he/she wants the money and power.”
