As high pressure over the Southeast coast takes full control over the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas; a hazy, hot, and humid air mass will take hold over the region.
Scattered clouds to clear skies can be expected today and tomorrow with a wind from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph. The main story, though, is clearly the heat as temperatures sky rocket into the upper 80's to lower 90's along the immediate coast and mid to upper 90's away from the coast. The combination of temperatures in the 90's and dew points in the 60's and lower 70's will translate to a heat index in the mid 90's to mid 100's throughout the region in the afternoon hours today and tomorrow. As a result, excessive heat warnings and heat advisories have been issued throughout the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas. Lows tonight and Friday morning will only fall into the upper 60's to lower 70's. Fog will be a threat for some locations along the coast.
A rapidly weakening cold front will approach by Friday evening with widely scattered showers and strong to severe isolated thunderstorms. These thunderstorms will be capable of wind gusts over 40 mph, occasional lightning, small hail, and very heavy downpours. Temperatures ahead of the cold front will rise into the upper 80's to lower 90's along the coast and lower to mid 90's elsewhere.
By Saturday morning the cold front or what's left of the cold front boundary will exit off the coast followed by clearing skies. While humidity and temperatures will be slightly cooler; hazy, hot, and humid conditions can still be expected. Temperatures will range from the lower to mid 80's along the immediate coast and upper 80's to lower 90's away.
A more powerful cold front can be expected by Sunday with widespread showers and strong to severe thunderstorms. This cold front will put an end to the humid conditions with dew points falling back into the 50's behind the frontal passage. With an increase in clouds and rain, temperatures will rise into the lower to mid 80's for highs. However, humid conditions can be expected ahead of the cold front.
High pressure over the Great Lakes will take hold for Monday and Tuesday with tranquil and comfortable conditions. Temperatures will fall back to near to even below normal levels with lows in the mid to upper 50's and highs in the upper 70's to lower 80's.
