Opinions vary as to whether Amazon’s new Kindle Fire tablet will be competition for the Apple iPad.
Amazon unveiled its new product on Wednesday. The Washington Post reports it is expected to sell for $250 and include a free subscription to Amazon’s $79 per-year service.
Kindle Fire will also allow customers to buy things from Amazon.com more directly, and a Prime membership will give users discounts on shipping.
According to Tech Crunch, Kindle Fire has a 7 inch screen, and displays its content in full color. It will run Android. It is expected to have only has 6 GB of internal storage, and it will be WiFi-only at launch. Its battery life is about 10 hours, and the Kindle Fire does not have a camera.
Info World reports that the Amazon tablet is designed for reading books and magazines, playing videos and games, and surfing the Web. But it is not expected to have a multitouch screen, fast processor, or a lot of the sensors and connectivity capabilities that the iPad has brought to the market.
They call it a competitor to the Barnes & Noble Nook tablet, but not the iPad, which is looked at as a positive. They say the iPad and the Kindle Fire both serve different needs, and both should do well.
Meanwhile, competitor Apple continues to believe that size matters. Apple Insider reports that suppliers for Amazon's tablet are questioning the wisdom of releasing a 7-inch model when Apple has been so successful with the 9.7-inch screen of the iPad.
