Atlantic County authorities Friday were investigating the shooting death of Atlantic City radio talk show host April Kauffman who was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds Thursday morning in her Linwood home.

Kauffman, 47, who hosted a weekly talk radio program on WOND, was found around 11:30 a.m. Thursday by a station employee who called 911. Kauffman lived with her husband, Dr. James Kauffman, an Egg Harbor Township-based endocrinologist. Neighbors told KYW-TV in Philadelphia that when Kauffman left her in the early morning Thursday, she was sleeping with a pillow over her face, according to FOXNews.com.

The Atlantic Prosecutor's Office, which with the Linwood police, is investigating the murder, is being tight-lipped about the case.

Kauffman was a strong supporter of veterans.

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) ,issued a statement in which he said he was "incredibly shocked and saddened" to learn of Kauffman’s death.

“Quite simply, April was a patriot in every sense of the word and her tireless work on behalf of those who served made a real difference in the lives of many," Menendez said. "The Atlantic County community has lost one of its most passionate voices, and she will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends in this difficult time."

State Sen. Joe Kyrillos (R-Monmouth), who is opposing Menendez in the U.S. Senate election, also knew Kaufmann.

"I am deeply saddened to hear the news of April's tragic death," Kyrillos said. “April was truly a force for good in Atlantic County. Her leadership and advocacy on veteran’s issues helped so many people. It is impossible to imagine why anyone would want to hurt someone who gave so much of themselves to help others. My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones. What an inexplicable tragedy.”

Authorities are urging anyone with information on the crime to contact the Linwood police at 609-927-4108.
