M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank worked its way from Alabama to the Garden State
It weighs 67 tons, cost $4.35 million, and hauling such a mass will get you just 2.6 miles per gallon. And it's somewhere in New Jersey.
A new Abrams tank made its way from Anderson, Ala., to an undisclosed location in the Garden State this week, after a trip that included an overnight stay at the Delaware Water Gap Welcome Center off I-80, the Pocono Record of Stroudsburg, Pa., reports.
Officially called the M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank, the vehicle is designed to see and engage the enemy first. It has been used during the Gulf War, and is now in use in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The tank itself weighs about 134,000 pounds, but with its entire transport rig, it weighs in at about 225,000 pounds, the driver of the rig says.
The tank "is the backbone of the U.S. heavy armored force," according to The Armor Site. The transport team would not say how the tank will be used. Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County — "Home of American Firepower" — is the likely destination.
