Police are still investigating the single-car accident that cost two popular New Jersey teenagers their lives in East Brunswick Saturday night.

Eighteen-year old Nicole Surace graduated from Spotswood High School in 2013, while Jeff Szatkowski, 17, was a senior there.

NJ.com reported that Szatkowski’s 2004 Ford Mustang ran off Dutch Road in East Brunswick at 7:50 p.m. on Saturday, slammed into a telephone pole, flipped over, hit a tree, and came down on its roof, according to East Brunswick Police Lt. Kevin Zebro.

The teens later died at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. About 100 of their friends gathered at the hospital after they learned of the deaths.

Surace, from Milltown, had been a Spotswood High varsity cheerleading captain, and Szatkowski, from Spotswood, starred in football and baseball. Spotswood cheerleading coach Colleen Meyers said, according to The Asbury Park Press, “Nicole was beautiful inside and out. She could brighten up a room just because she was in it.”

Spotswood football coach Andy Cammarano said Szatkowski, who played split end and defensive back, mixed courage with humor. Cammarano added, according to The Asbury Park Press, “This year’s team success sort of represented him in the sense that he played with a lot of courage but kept things light.”

Szatkowski had also been the starting second baseman for Spotswood’s baseball team.

Spotswood Athletic Director Bill Visokay called the two “quality, first-class kids.” “A parent should never have to bury their own kids and my heart and the heart of the school community is really out to both families,” Visokay said, according to mycentraljersey.com.

Zebro said the investigation was continuing. Mycentraljersey.com reported that anyone with any information regarding the crash is asked to contact East Brunswick Patrolman James Angermeier or Patrolman Glenn Tabasko at 732-390-6969.
