A Lyndhurst woman who delivered mail in Secaucus has been accused of handling more than 18 kilograms of cocaine from October 2010 until she was arrested last week.
Christina Nunez, 30, is being charged with taking packages of cocaine mailed from Puerto Rico and delivering them to drug dealers in Camden.
According to WPIX, the federal complaint says that Nunez had a supplier from Puerto Rico mail packages of cocaine to addresses on her Secaucus route. But Nunez intercepted the packages and scanned them as delivered at the post office.
Authorities said some of the addresses on the cocaine packages were real, while others were phony, NorthJersey.com reported. Nunez admitted that she received $500 to $600 for each cocaine package she delivered.
According to an Associated Press report on Fox News, postal inspectors found an Express Mail shipment of cocaine going to an address on Nunez’s route back in February 2011, and the drug deliveries stopped for about nine months.
Last week, according to Cliffview Pilot, inspectors learned that another package was coming in from Puerto Rico. They replaced the cocaine with a fake substance and put a GPS in the delivery. They later arrested Nunez and her boyfriend Luis Vega, 36, at their home in Lyndhurst.
According to authorities, Nunez and Vega were charged with conspiring to possess cocaine with intent to distribute 500 grams or more. Nunez will also be charged with mail theft. Both charges are federal offenses.
Bail has been set at $100,000 for both Nunez and Vega.
