A 26-year-old man found shot once in the head shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday at Hunterdon Street and Mapes Avenue is the first person killed in Newark after more than a month with no killings in the City, police said today.
March was the first calendar month since May 1966 with no murders, officials announced last week. The last murder was 37-days ago on Feb. 28. Wednesday's killing eliminated a chance to break a record 43-day span with no killings, set in March and April 2008, the longest period since 1961 without a murder.
Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Katherine Carter identified the dead man as Bloomfield resident Khalil Hamlette, who may have lived in Newark at some point.
Hamlette was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.Newark Police Department spokesman Detective Todd McClendon declined to comment on who found the victim's body, citing the need to protect potential witnesses and the ongoing investigation.
The shooter fled the scene in a blue vehicle occupied by two other unidentified men, city police said in a statement. Police have no motive or suspects in the shooting death.
There have been 11 murders in Newark this year, the same amount at this time last year. Shootings incidents are down 12 percent from the same period in 2009, and shooting victims are down 19 percent, McClendon said.
Five shootings have been reported in the city since Monday but details on those cases were not immediately available.
