Freak accident on Sweet 16 party bus leaves Sayreville teen dead, friends traumatized

One of 65 teenagers going to a Sweet 16 party Friday was killed when he stuck his head out a party bus roof hatch and struck an overpass.

New York Daily News reported that 16-year-old Daniel Fernandez of Sayreville died of severe head trauma shortly after the incident. A spokesman for the Port Authority said Fernandez’s head struck the underside of the Fletcher Avenue overpass near the George Washington Bridge.

Alex Franco, 41, works as a security guard on the bus. He said the teenagers opened the hatch to cool off, and he warned them three or four times to keep it closed, according to the New York Post.

Investigators are looking into where Franco was when Fernandez was struck. According to an Associated Press report on ABC News, he said he went to the lower floor of the double-decker bus to tell the driver the bus was too hot.

Franco added that the teens were checked for alcohol before they got on the bus and none were served while they were inside.

Witnesses said the other teenagers appeared to be traumatized by the accident.

"Kids said they saw a lot of blood and they saw his head get struck,” said EMT Leon Tyrone McKivor, 52, according to the New York Post. “I could see the look on their faces. A handful were covered with blood.”

According to Cliffview Pilot, the roof hatch is emergency-only, and is supposed to have a safety seal. There was no word on whether the bus had a warning light on the dashboard that indicated the hatch was open.

As a mother of two boys my heart ached when i first heard this story on the news. My condolences goes out to the family I hope God lessens your pain. I'm also worried about the other children that were exposed to this tragic event. I hope they receive therapy of some sort.

I would sue the inventor of escape hatches, because if there was nothing wrong with the bus, there would be no need for escape hatches? I take that back. I would sue the people throwing a party; next time, everyone just stay home on a Friday night. Hmmm, we have to sue SOMEBODY.

This is no accident, it's what's supposed to happen when beings are raised up with warning labels all round them telling them what they are and are not supposed to do. Society needs to turn around encourage the development of common sense. I feel bad for those people who got stuck in traffic instead. Next I hope there is not a mandate by some safety group to put a secondary safety hatch release on these buses at the expense of tax payers.

This is not a freak accident. It's stupidity.

Lets see who we can blame this time for the stupidity of a 16year old. No common sense on what's going on in the real world, unaware of the dangers and then we are supposed to sympthesize? Don't think so.

Children can be conned out of inheritance after multiple marriages

BY CAROL ABAYA NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM THE SANDWICH GENERATION Multiple marriages and blended families can mean children get cheated out of money and assets their parent(s) earned and had before the second or third marriage. At the 2012 senior citizens’ law day conference, Lawrence A. Friedman, Bridgewater elder law attorney, said elders need to protect their children of prior marriages from being disinherited. "Even if your spouse’s current will provides for your children, your spouse may change it after you pass away,” he said. In addition to protecting one's child, an appropriate will can minimize N.J. estate taxes, which kick in if assets are over $675,000. At the conference, Cathyanne Pisciotta from North Brunswick discussed guardianship which could be necessary if various legal documents are not signed. Pisciotta said that if a person does not have a durable power of attorney (for financial affairs) and a living will (for medical decisions), anyone else can seek guardianship of that person. An expensive court proceeding is mandatory. And she said, “If one person seeks guardianship, someone else can challenge the appointment. Another relative may seek to be appointed guardian because he/she wants the money and power.”
