For public safety reasons, trick-or-treating in New Jersey has been postponed to Monday, Nov. 5.

According to Patch.com, Gov. Chris Christie issued an executive order that no town can hold Halloween festivities, including trick-or-treating, on Oct. 31. All towns are ordered to move all public celebrations.

If a town has already rescheduled Halloween events, they are allowed to keep those plans. However, officials still suggest that they choose Monday instead.

The New York Post reports that Christie postponed Halloween events because it’s not safe in the days following Sandy. The governor says that children would face the danger of fallen trees, power outages and flooding.

“In too many communities in our state, the damage and losses from this storm are still being sorted out, and dangerous conditions abound even as our emergency management and response officials continue their work," Christie said, according to NJ.com.

Christie referred to the postponement as a "common sense and necessary step," explaining that fallen power lines and flooding are still great dangers, USA Today reports.

Local officials were told to advise and encourage their communities to delay all festivities until Monday.
