An Independence Day holiday weekend shooting claimed the life of a New Jersey corrections officer, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today.

Katrina Owens, of South Brunswick, was attending a barbecue with a male friend in the Newark/East Orange area when she was shot and killed following a dispute. Owens was the married mother of three children, and was employed as a corrections officer at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is investigating her death. No other details are available at this time.

Earlier in her career, Owens successfully completed a 12-week training course at the Juvenile Justice Commission/Division of Criminal Justice Satellite Training Academy by the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission. The 37-year-old was a veteran of the Department of Corrections since 2003.

In April 2010, a dispute over a child support case led to the double shooting of two Trenton corrections officers in Hamilton after 60-year-old Ralph Johnson ambushed the couple as they sat in their SUV outside their home.

New Jersey Corrections Officer Laughfiel Nicholson Jr., 46, and his wife Joann Nicholson, 48, were on their way to work in Trenton when the shooting occurred. Laughfiel Nicholson died at the scene. Joann Nicolson suffered a gunshot wound to the arm, but survived, NJ.com reported.

Johnson and Joann Nicolson have a teenaged daughter together and lived on the same street in Hamilton. Authorities said Johnson was angry about having to pay additional child support for his daughter. The 60-year-old man committed suicide at Ewingville Cemetery, where a relative is buried, as police closed in to arrest him.
